Best Comics Encyclopedia in the Market

I owned the DC encyclopedia edition before this one as well as the 2014 Marvel Encyclopedia. I used to think both were pretty good, although the DC one was less appealing at the time as I found the formatting and numerous blemishes sloppy. The actual information in that edition wasn't very good either, nor was the artistry and colors. Then I got this encyclopedia as I got rid of the DC one before it. Holy shmokes! This one blew not only the 2012 model out of the park, but also the Marvel Encyclopedia! Now listen, I'm more a DC fan at heart but I like Marvel too, but even with all of my biases removed, this encyclopedia is simply the best. The entries clearly come from passionate writers and every paragraph manages to fit an impressive amount of information. Compared to the Marvel encyclopedia, which hardly ever delves into the character's origin stories and seems to be happy with an abundance of typos and confusing/boring exposition, this book is not only concise but engaging. The artwork is masterful and fresh, and there are no blurry or poorly pasted images anywhere; they all truly come from the best of artists. While the Marvel Encyclopedia had better art than the DC one before, it still had its fill of blurry drawings and outdated designs. But this encyclopedia does away with all of that! So not only are the paragraphs filled with meaningful and well-written info, the art is top-notch too. The only criticism I have is that on some pages that contain dark ink, such as the Batman entry, the ink must be too sensitive because my fingerprint becomes visible if touching some of those page's dark ink. However this only effected four pages that I have seen and is a minor nuisance; the text cannot be smudged whatsoever. Also, this book covers everything from pre-flashpoint to rebirth, so it takes the best of all three "Eras" which is good if you were someone who disliked any of them. Overall, great product and is absolutely worth it (and unlike the Marvel Encyclopedia, the binding is actually very well done and the book itself thinner).

Impressive and beautiful

Very nice and thick hardback with cover(lighter for reference in photos). This was for my 20 year old son who was very pleased with the book. It has so many pages that it can be enjoyed for a long time by either looking at and reading detail filled page or just by using as a reference when a character detail is needed. The images are clear and colored comic book photos and drawings that are interesting to browse or to refer to study the details. The information contains debut dates, current version info, real names, base, height, weight, eyes, hair, powers/abilities, allies, enemies and affiliation statistics for each character, their description, some debut facts that they headline as on the record, and many other details regarding the character. Of course some characters have multiple pages of information while some share a page. This would be a great gift for new DC comic enthusiasts as well as those who could almost write the book themselves. I am probably just the average type of fan who knows only what has been out in mainstream media and I could spend hours looking at the beautiful images and reading it. I just love printed books overall but even more so when I can learn something!

A Great tome of DC knowledge but...

Comic history is very fluid and none are more so than DC Comics. With all the origin changes and world changing events its hard to keep up to date with it all in a printed medium. So the timing of this encyclopedia is curious. With the Rebirth event debuting only weeks later they come out with this latest reference guide. The On The Record sections are great to give you a heads up to upcoming changes. Although its limited due to Rebirth having just lauched. So no big Superboy aka Jon Kent spread. No Watchmen or Superwoman. So if your a fan of Rebirth. You aren't going to find much here. This is definitely a book for the casual reader and DC fan alike.

I love this book so much!!!

At first I didn’t think I’d like the organization of alphabetical order. I wanted the order of how everything shows up in the comic books but after the unorganization of a few other books I ordered, I actually like the alphabetical order a bit more. I did notice something wrong with the content though. Under Robin, the only Robin really shown is Damien Wayne. Nightwing has his own section but I didn’t find the other robins anywhere.—- while writing this I took a look at the index and did eventually find some stuff about Jason Todd and Tim Drake. I expected more about them but I’m glad I did find them in the book because Robin is one of my favorites. There’s so much information about each character, the creator must have gone through a lot to create this book. My review probably doesn’t show it but I really love this book and it was definite worth it!!!! I’m such a nerd for this kind of stuff!!!!

Perfect!

This was a Christmas gift for my 11 year old son and he was thrilled! It is a rather hefty book but that doesn't stop him from taking it with him everywhere! He says that it has everything he wants/needs to know about all things DC so he is one happy camper! We are very happy with this purchase at a great price!

AMAZING!!

AMAZING!!!! so much info on the major players, the minor players, and even a "roll-call" in the back for the characters you might not remember. Makes following the time line a bit easier. Great book.

Good, but not excellent.

There have been a LOT of changes in the DC Universe. Too many, in fact. It seems everything has been changed, and not always for the better. There are a few glaring omissions, and a few of the entries lack critical background information. As a PRODUCT, the book is lovely and well-printed, with great color and very good paper. Some of the ARTWORK is poor, but you can't have everything...

A PG-13 book.

I liked the details of the characters but with good detail came some pretty graphic storylines. If this book were a movie. I would say it is pg-13. There is talk of slitting throats and other murderous descriptions. If I knew the content I probably would not have bought it for my 8 year old. We really liked the Spider-Man encyclopedia by dk company but the dc comics was maybe for older kids.

The artwork is great, wish there was more of it

I just got this and was really impressed with it as soon as I picked it up. This is a HUGE book both in content and actual size. It is not going to fit my bookshelf with my other comic related materials. It measures 12 1/32" tall x 10 1/4" wide x 1 1/2" thick. It will take quite a while to get through all the info in this book. I skimmed through it and it seems to be exceptionally comprehensive. The artwork is great, wish there was more of it. I added a pic of this book side by side with the Batman encyclopedia for reference.

Nice book to suppress your obsessive compulsive disorder.

Nice book to suppress your obsessive compulsive disorder. I could read it like a book, enough information to give a proper introduction to each character. Some characters like the major ones have 1-2 pages while minor characters have a half page or a simple panel. If you have the Marvel version then you know what to expect in terms of size and the quantity of information. Cheers!
